Affton Asst. Super Weissflug to Retire Next Year

Affton School District Assistant Superintendent Ken Weissflug will retire June 30, 2012.

At a special meeting on Tuesday, the Affton School Board accepted the June 2012 resignations of eight members of its staff, including Weissflug.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Weissflug told Patch of his time at Affton. “It’s changed my life dramatically—all for the good.”

Weissflug has worked in the Affton School District for 19 years. He spent his first six years as an English and social studies teacher at Rogers Middle School. He spent two years as assistant principal at Mesnier Primary and then moved back to Rogers for four years as principal. Weissflug spent the past seven years of his career as assistant superintendent.

Throughout his career, Weissflug also coached baseball, basketball and football at Affton High School, and former students still sometimes refer to him as “Coach.”

When former superintendent Don Francis unexpectedly retired in June of 2010, Weissflug acted as interim superintendent for a year during . Mesnier Principal Steve Brotherton .

Weissflug also applied for the superintendent position.

The district will likely begin to look for someone to fill Weissflug’s position at the start of next year.

“It will be big shoes to fill, but it will also be an opportunity for us as a district to seek out someone excellent,” Brotherton said.

Weissflug said that he is looking forward to his retirement. He plans to golf, travel with his wife and spend time with his grandchildren.

Seven others also announced their retirements next year, including Prudy Kendro and Laverne Sebben, the librarians for Rogers and Mesnier, respectively.

Others retiring include:

• Tom Berry, social studies teacher at Affton High School
• Sandra Coleman, literacy coach at Mesnier Primary
• Nancy Jones, sixth grade science teacher at Rogers Middle School
• Barbara Lohbeck, physical education teacher at Gotsch Intermediate School
• Rita Loretta, curriculum coordinator for the Affton School District

All eight are retiring through the district's voluntary separation incentive program.
