Boy Scouts Fall Recruitment Under Way

Local boys can join the scouts Thursday, September 8.

Each fall, the Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scouts of America Council conducts its annual School Night to Join Scouting recruitment drive. The Council hopes to recruit more than 8,000 new Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers.

Boys in first through fifth grade from the , Lindbergh and Hancock Place School Districts will have the opportunity to sign up for scouting at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 8. Flyers with contact information for your child’s local Cub Scout Pack went home in August. Flyers and posters are also being distributed in local schools.

Robert Sinda, district director for the Boy Scouts of America, said that recruitment goals are made possible due to cooperation of area district superintendents and teachers.

“They allow us to come in and hand out fliers and hang posters, and we go classroom to classroom,” Sinda said. “We hold rallies and talk to the boys about what we do in scouting. Allowing someone from the Scouts to do classroom visits and/or school rallies has been key and is greatly appreciated.”

Scouting only costs $15 per year for membership and according to Sinda, it is a very flexible program allowing for youth to participate in multiple activities throughout the school year.

“Boys can be involved in sports and scouts; you don’t have to make every meeting. We are an organization that tries to instill in young men character. It’s one of the big things that we do—good morals and ethics,” Sinda said.

Every program sets its own agenda and calendar. Scouts participate in trips, formal meetings and activities where boys are awarded their pins for Cub Scouts and merit badges.
