Crestwood Elementary students took time out of class Tuesday morning to thank the city's police and fire responders with a special ceremony.
The program was an all-school affair. Fifth-grade Boy Scout members presented the flag, and students and staff alike sang songs to celebrate these everyday heroes, as well as remember Sept. 11, 2001. Six students read essays on how emergency responders make a difference in daily life. Students topped off the ceremony by presenting officers in attendance with a bevy of handmade thank-you cards. One girl even presented a Crestwood police officer with a string of blue beads.
While some fire district members had to bow out before the ceremony to answer an emergency call, they did it on full stomachs--the school's PTO hosted a special breakfast for first responders earlier that morning.
