In the 2012 campaign cycle, residents identifying themselves from Affton or Shrewsbury have made only a handful of contributions to the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, the Democratic and Republican Party nominees.
Only seven donations identified as coming from Affton residents and 15 from Shrewsbury residents showed up in Federal Election Commission reports.
Of course, the records do not account for residents who use a St. Louis mailing address. For example, about 141 donations came from donors with a 63123 ZIP code, which takes in Affton and the surrounding area. Ann Schmidt, a retired clergy person, was among the larger donors, contributing $5,000 to the Obama campaign in five separate donations.
Of the donations from 63123, approximately 73 percent of individual donations went to President Obama, although the donations to the president tended to be smaller than those to challenger Romney.
The public-record list of contributors in Affton and Shrewsbury includes a variety of physicians, attorneys, retirees, college professors and business executives who donated to each candidate. Of the seven donations from Affton, all were to Romney; in Shrewsbury, 15 donations went to Obama—all but one from one man who is a retiree in the community.
Patch has created an interactive database so you can see how much your neighbors are donating to the presidential campaign—and to which candidate they’re writing their checks. We’ve included communities across Missouri, so if you want to see what the campaign contributions in St. Charles or Ladue, go right ahead.
Note: The information in this story is based on a search of donations from residents who claimed a Affton or Shrewsbury address. You can also search the database by ZIP code only.
The information in the database was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission’s website. The data is based on quarterly reports, and is current through July. The data will be updated in mid-October.
