Bob Garwtiz tells Lindbergh High School students about his tour of duty as a Quartermaster on the USS Farnholt, in the South Pacific. “I guess we all lived through what was hopefully only a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said at the 2012 History Alive program.

Lindbergh High School history teacher Brad Durnell invites war veterans in the community to share their stories with students this spring in the fourth annual History Alive Program, according to a release from the school district.

"As a history teacher, I enlist the veterans to help me breathe life back into our study of the past," Durnell said.

“The goal of this program is to instigate conversations between veterans and students and begin to truly breathe life back into the history that we study,” Durnell said in the release. “This is a rewarding experience not only for the students, who get to talk face to face with a person who lived through the history we study, but also for the veterans, who have the opportunity to work with the next generation and share their stories."

Veterans will speak with small groups of two to four students, sharing their personal experiences and life lessons learned while serving in the American armed forces.

The sessions will be from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Lindbergh High School, with lunch provided. Vets can also come in for a morning session (7-11 a.m.) or an afternoon session (11 a.m.-3 p.m.). The program will be on the following days:

  • WWII – Friday, March 15
  • Korean War – Friday, April 12
  • Vietnam War – Monday, May 6
  • Wars in the Middle East – Friday, May 10

If you or someone you know may be interested, please send their names, phone numbers and/or email addresses to Brad Durnell at bdurnell@lindberghschools.ws.

Are veterans from the other side invited as well? (Germans, Japanese, Italians, Vietnamese?) If that would happen, wouldn't it help to provide a more balanced viewpoint?
