Poll: Should Rockin' Gators, Affton Businesses Be Exempt from Smoking Ban?

Six businesses in the Affton area would no longer be able to offer smoking if the St. Louis County Council passes a plan to remove exemptions from the smoking ban. Tell us what you think and vote in our poll.

Several Affton businesses would lose the ability to allow smoking indoors in the St. Louis County Council passes a proposed update to its two-year-old indoor smoking ban.

Six businesses in the 63123 ZIP code have exemptions under the smoking ban, meaning they can still offer indoor smoking. Those businesses include:

  • Crossroads, 11440 Concord Village Ave.
  • Larry J's, 4000 Weber Road
  • Caddy Shack Saloon, 4676 Oldenburg Avenue
  • Rockin Gators Bar & Grill, 9538 Gravois
  • CT Magoc's, 8100 Hildesheim
  • River City Pub, 7906 Gravois

County council members debated a measure on Tuesday night that would eliminate the 135 exemptions by local businesses—plus two by the county's gambling venues, River City Casino and Hollywood Casino St. Louis.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that council member Mike O’Mara, D-Florissant, said he put forth the change to "level the playing field" for businesses that don’t have the exemptions.

This subject tires me out! If a business does not serve food and is a drinking establishment, what right does anybody have to tell them what they can do inside? If you don't like it, don't go! I don't protest when a big fat person is sitting next to me burping and acting like a pig, however, I find that sort of behavior much more irriating than someone who smokes. Another way government tries to run our lives. Give it a rest!!!

goes both ways. I didn't say all fat people but some do and I find that offensive, just as folks find smokers offensive.

And,it's not rude because it happens. Thin people as well .... and that is exactly the reason why this smoking in private bars is a stupid subject to debate .... everybody mind their own business as to what goes on in private business and homes. Keep the city and state government out of my business. Period.

Nobody is forcing anybody to go into a bar. So if there is smoking and you don't like it, go somewhere else! There is a big difference between banning smoking in public places and in private establishments. A proprietor should be able to decide for himself to allow smoking, and his customers decide if they want to patronize his establishment.
