Update: Fast Food Workers Striking Over Working Conditions, Wages, Around St. Louis

An organized movement of strikes began in St. Louis and is spreading across the region. Employees at McDonald's in North St. Louis County, and Jimmy John's took to the picket lines Wednesday. Employees at 20 fast food locations will strike Thursday.

People peacefully gathered and marched in front of a Ferguson McDonald's Restaurant today. You could hear the group of about 100 chanting during the strike," We started from the bottom and now we're here; $7.35 just ain't fair." There was also, "We want change and we ain't talking about pennies." As well, a whole host of additional songs. But for all the people smiling, the subject at hand was serious. The crowd gathered as part of a movement to unionize fast food restaurants throughout the St. Louis Region. Employees at the Ferguson McDonald's, located at 9131 W. Florissant, stood outside in plain clothes around 3:45 p.m., and protested for respect through better pay and improved working conditions. Shannon Garth-Rhodes, spokesperson with…

The South County Office Depot, located at 6263 S. Lindbergh Blvd., will be closing its doors June 15. All merchandise is currently up to 50-percent off. When Patch stopped by on Monday, the store was still chock full of merchandise, and the remaining computers and laptops were priced at 10 percent off. A store manager Patch spoke with on Monday said he did not know why the store was closing or what would become of the property, which is owned by Suntrup Auto.  After the South County location closes, the two closest Office Depot stores will be in Arnold at 912 Arnold Commons Dr. and in Kirkwood at 1241 S. Kirkwood Rd. South County residents in search of office supplies may also visit Office Max at 4106 Lemay Ferry Rd., which is about five …

Green Park Automotive: Unforgettable Service Will Return Soon

An owner said he thinks it's the last service station in St. Louis to pump customers' gas.

Green Park Automotive, 2730 Union Road in Mehlville, has given its customers unforgettable service since 1971. Resident Terry Maiden was concerned it was closing when the front of the shop was dug up to install a new canopy. Maiden called it "one of the few places where an attendant would pump your gas and wipe your windshield! I have had my cars serviced by them for many years. They always did a first class job!" Attendants pumps gas, clean windshields and all those other things they used to do. Co-owner Kevin Hughes said he believes it is the only station left in St. Louis that provides service as drivers wait, an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch states. “If there’s another, I haven’t heard about it,” Hughes, 31, is quoted in the …

I agree about the service at Green Park Automotive. I recall Bob Jackson coming to my rescue over 20 years ago. I was at work in Affton, my husband was out of town, it was winter and after 8 pm. I called him for a tow and told him he was my ride home. He came to tow my car and drop me off at home. This is just one of several times that his service was above & beyond the normal.   more ›

Business is Up For Pizza World Since Moving to Shrewsbury

The shop moved out of Deer Creek Center last year.

Since moving to Shrewsbury about a year ago, Pizza World’s business has been up, owner/manager Tim Miller said. Pizza World moved out of the Deer Creek Center before the center was redeveloped with Ross Dress for Less, Joann’s Fabrics, Buy Buy Baby, Marshalls and other large national retailers as anchors. Miller said the new space, at 7504 Murdoch Avenue, is smaller than his Deer Creek location but business from the nearby neighborhood has made up for it. Miller is 25 and has worked at the shop since he was 16. He and Virgil Avamzado bought the store from Robert Goombas in January 2012. Since then Avamzado has left, leaving Miller as the only owner. He added beer last summer, and said it didn’t add greatly to his business. The pizza itself…

Petition Drive Opposes Walmart Grocery Store in South County

A Walmart Neighborhood Market on at Tesson Ferry and Butler Hill roads is not needed, not wanted and too disruptive, says petition drive coordinator Maryann Gregory.

When Patch mentioned that a Walmart Neighborhood Market was being proposed near the intersection of Tesson Ferry and Butler Hill roads, some readers were less than enthused. It is, after all, the second proposed for the area after the approval of a new store in Kenrick Plaza. "We are one of the youngest couples in the area and we don't want Walmart to ruin the quiet lifestyle my elder neighbors have.. We love using Schnucks and also if we need something from Walmart there are already 3 locations within mins!!!!" reader Mike Bockhoff said. Now a "sweet little old lady from Mayberry" is fighting to keep the retail behemoth away from her neighborhood. "We don't need another grocery store in this area," Maryann Gregory said. "We don't need the…
