Shrewsbury Mayor on South County Connector: Doesn't Want a Big Slab of Cement

The South County Connector would take traffic off Shrewsbury Avenue, but Mayor Buckley said it needs to be done right.

About 70 area residents gathered Wednesday at the Shrewsbury City Center to learn about the South County Connector, a proposed 4-lane road through Shrewsbury and Webster Groves as it connects Hanley Road in Maplewood and the River Des Peres Parkway. Trailnet, the group known for promoting bicyling and hiking in St. Louis, hosted the meeting. The group's Marielle Brown said the 4-lane road would be from 1.5 to 2 miles long. At intersections it would be up to seven lanes wide. It would be elevated through several points, with a full interchange at Interstate 44. A 75-day public comment period on the project’s draft Environmental Impact Study (EIS) began in early May. The design phase would begin if the county approves the EIS. Shrewsbury …

The impetus for the S. County connector is ultimately due to the flow of people from Jefferson County to Clayton. Yes, it would be used by StL County residents as well, but if you look at the traffic projections driving the connector, it's coming from the growth in the southern exurbs. I feel very strongly that StL County residents shouldn't bear the burden through the loss of neighborhoods, …   more ›

Bosnian Muslim Mosque Loses Tax-Exempt Status, Do You Agree?

The group let the land sit unused for several years, which the county says ceded its rights to be exempt from paying taxes.

The Islamic Community Center, a congregation of mostly Bosnian Muslims, bought land in south St. Louis County for a mosque, but then failed to build immediately due to the recession, according to an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. St. Louis County’s Board of Equalization has said the group ceded its First Amendment right to exempt the property from taxation when it let the land sit unused. “No evidence was presented to establish any actual or regular use of the property for any religious educational or charitable purposes,” a board report said. “The property is vacant and unused real estate.” The religious group filed a lawsuit in April challenging the decision, saying it had always intended to develop it into a religious and …

It's cases like this why "Board of Equalization" and their bias toward TAX collection needs to change. Tax-exempt status 501(c) Corporations are Federal approved. Land qualifies for exempt holdings Federally. A case of Tax revenue trumping tax exemption. Solution! Just putting up a tent--(Like old time Gospel revivals) on the property should make it ---Charitable use. Well! Are there Really "…   more ›

Stenger: Value Village Gives Up on Move to Affton

County Councilman Steve Stenger told Patch the lease has been dissolved.

Affton residents who said they don't need one more thrift store will get their way, apparently. Value Village, which will likely be forced out of its Kenrick Plaza location by an incoming Walmart had wanted to move to 10040-42 Gravois Road. Now it looks like the move will not happen. A Patch article on the possible move has generated almost 40 comments, most of them against the thrift store move. A rezoning was needed, and District 6 St. Louis County Councilman Steve Stenger needed to OK it, which he opposed. On Monday he told Patch that Value Village has “dissolved the lease, or avoided getting into a lease, and they’re moving in a different direction.” Value Village had a petition with over 3,000 signatures to hopefully convince Stenger …

Another "DINER" opening on Gravois? Who knows. We need another Eatery! Maybe, Affton could re-introduce itself on that cable show--"Diners,Diners, and Dives". That's what we need, more Publicity, that will draw MACY's to open up on Gravois. Actually, Affton's gun control laws would outlaw the use of any "MAC-e". Just having some fun , people. Don't start peeling me again! Please.   more ›

Privacy or Law Enforcement? Release of Concealed Weapon Permit Names

The Missouri Highway Patrol admitted releasing the names of concealed weapon permit holders to the Social Security Administration in what the government said was a law enforcement investigation. Do you agree?

The Missouri Highway Patrol admitted last week that it released the names of at least 163,000 concealed weapon permit holders to a federal agent investigating disability fraud, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a variety of other media outlets. The news has people buzzing on every side of the gun control debate. Locally, Republican Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones of Eureka told the newspaper he was "very concerned that this may be a back-door attempt to create the Eric Holder gun registry." The concealed weapon registry is not open to the public and Missouri law says it's a misdemeanor to disclose information about the people who hold permits. Missouri State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, was cited on Wednesday in …
