Affton Firefighters Send Their Support To Dyrk Burcie

Affton firefighters, along with fire departments across the county, send pictures of support to young Dyrk Burcie who is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Members of the Affton Fire Protection District took time out of their busy schedule to send a message of support to Dyrk Burcie.

Dyrk, the 4 year old son of Dallas Fire Department Lieutenant Dameon Burcie, was diagnosed with pediatric liver cancer that had spread to both lungs. Despite a liver transplant and nine rounds of chemotherapy the cancer continued to progress and Dyrk's prognosis became terminal. In April, Dyrk’s parents decided to stop the intensive treatment and make the most of what time they have left with their son.

As a showing of support for their fellow firefighter and his family, other Dallas Fire Department engine companies posted pictures of Dyrk’s name written in turnout coats, fire hose and even performing a choreographed dance at a road intersection on Facebook.

Since the postings began, word has spread throughout the firefighting community and a multitude of departments across the nation and countries as far away as Australia are posting pictures of support.

Captain Steve Davila said “This was an opportunity for us to send a message to a fellow firefighter and his family. No matter where you are a firefighter, across the street or across the world we are all part of the firefighter family.”
