Have you always attended Affton Schools? Yes, I’ve always been an Affton student.

What extracurricular activities have you participated in? Basketball, volleyball, National Honor Society, theater, and I’m looking into DECA, Trend and Student Council. I also volunteer for hospice care.

What honors have you received? I attended the Missouri Scholars Academy this summer, and the National Council for Alcohol and Drug Awareness (NCADA) peer helper training last year.

Do you have plans for college? I hope to go to WashU.

What do you plan to major in? I’d like to do Pre-Med and study medicine. Eventually, I’d like to be a cardiologist.

What is your favorite subject? The Project Lead the Way BioMed program, I enjoy it a lot. I love the fact that it’s so hands on — last year we got to experience the dissection of a sheep’s heart and a cow’s eye, as well as got to see how joints and bones work, using cow joints as a model. That’s what got me interested in cardiology.

What teacher has made the biggest impact in your life and how? Mrs. Pierce, the SAIL teacher at Rogers Middle School, because I got to spend so much time in her class. I really enjoyed it; she made learning interesting. Also, Mrs. Kettelkamp at Mesnier Primary, she was the first to really engage me in learning. They both put me on the path to higher learning.

Who is your role model? My dad. He was studying in Bosnia during the time of the war and in 1992, he had to leave everything he had back there, move to America, and start over from scratch. To see where he’s gotten to now (he’s a coder at WashU), even with the death of my mom, and how he’s persevered.

What do you want people to know about Affton Schools? I like Affton and the strong sense of community. Affton Schools challenges their students to be the best they can they be, and I like how involved teachers and counselors are in students’ lives. Everyone in Affton is very nice and helpful. It’s nice to have such a good foundation and people around you to help you succeed.
