Catch the Cougar Spirit with Back to Football Friday

Using technology to connect math to football in the classroom.

At Rogers Middle School, we are all excited about our Back to Football Friday activities which took place today, September 7, 2013. Last year we won a grant through the and we were treated with a visit from Rams player James Laurinaitis and awarded $10,000 to fund our walking trail. This year we are trying again to win the grant to improve our trail by adding exercise stations.

Again this year, the school was decorated in Rams Blue and Gold and students and staff showed their spirit by dressing in Rams gear and colors and Affton Football gear. Teachers planned related activities in their classrooms. In my 6th grade math class we used technology to tie football into math.

"Founded in 1999, BrainPOPcreates animated, curricular content that engages students, supports educators, and bolsters achievement." BrainPOP is a available as a website and an ipad app. It supports individual and whole class learning through it's use of the animated characters of Tim and his robot pal Moby. These two inform students on a wide variety of topics from Football to Einstein. Each video also features an interactive quiz and other educational resources.

Besides technology, my math students also engaged in other math centers including the much beloved teacher game Nixon Ball (throwing small plastic balls in in a bucket and counting your score exponentially), Spin to Win, Flash Card Race and a Football Math Packet from the NFL.

We've had a great August at Rogers Middle School and Back to Football Friday has helped us kick off September in style!
