Green Park Gathers for National Night Out

City of Green Park National Night Out successful despite heat.

National Night Out 2011 in the City of Green Park Wards 1 and 2 was a great success. The heat did not stop us. The mist fans were probably one of the biggest draws of the evening. NOT! We had plenty of food, drink and great conversation with neighbors. We had a DJ playing music and residents could sing karaoke. Some residents brought their best Elvis Presley and James Taylor voices, while other karaokers may have been watching too much American Idol.

We had many visitors, including police officers from the third precinct, Captain Mike Dierkes, Colonel Cox, the K-9 unit and the newest officer assigned to the City of Green Park, Matt Kappler. The police helicopter also gave the crowd a fly-by.

The residents were provided with information regarding Neighborhood Watch, Citizens' Police Academy and other police-related programs. Mehlville Fire District firefighters were also in attendance answering questions about their firetrucks and equipment. Elected Officials present were Mayor Konopka and his wife, Senator Jim Lembke, myself and my family.

I would like to give a special thanks to the St. Louis County police officers and Mehlville firefighters who attended our event. The residents of Green Park as well as the surrounding community are lucky to have men and women that deliver their services in such a professional manner. I would also like to give a big thanks to Green Park resident Vicki Gamache, who has coordinated the event for Ward 1 and Ward 2 the last few years. Her hard work and dedication made the evening enjoyable for all who attended.

Green Park residents living in Ward 3 have also gotten into the act of planning their National Night Out activities. National Night Out is a great way to meet your neighbors and help build a stronger community.

National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs such Neighborhood Watch and Citizens' Police Academy events
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Heat, humidity, rain or shine, I am looking forward to National Night Out 2012.
