Green Park Road Project Ongoing

An update on the Green Park Road replacement.

The Green Park Road Project is still ongoing but, there is light at the end of the tunnel! So, here is a recap of the project. This road project involves the replacement of the Gravois Creek Bridge located on Green Park Road. The road itself will be replaced and widened from Lin-Valle Road to Tesson Ferry Road. The ditches along this stretch of road will be replaced with curbs and new storm sewers. There will be left turn lanes at Cedarberry Place and Antrill Drive for traffic traveling north on Green Park Road. At Tesson Ferry there will be a right hand turn lane added for traffic turning onto northbound Tesson Ferry from Green Park Road. There will also be pedestrian trail from Tesson Ferry to Mueller Road. This trail will connect with the trail in Clydesdale Park.

At a board meeting last year, I brought up for discussion the need for a bike lane on northbound Tesson Ferry. This bike lane would allow residents living in the Sunset View subdivision access to the new trail. The park trail entrance at Green Park Road and Antrill Drive will have a pedestrian trail that will travel along the north side of Green Park Road to Lin-Valle. This trail will allow Green Park residents living in the subdivisions on the eastern side of the city safe access to Clydesdale Park and Grant's Trail.

Concrete Strategies was the contractor hired for the bridge project and Krupp Construction for the road replacement. The pictures with this blog are two photos from the old bridge and flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ike. There are also two pictures of the new Green Park Road Bridge.

The Project began in late March of 2011 with the demolition of the old bridge over Gravois Creek. This portion of the project was delayed by heavy spring rains. The creek on at least four different occasions had severe flash flooding that destroyed the foundation of box culvert before it could be completed above the water line. Once the box culvert foundation was completed, the bridge work could proceed regardless of how high the water levels. The Bridge was completed in October 2011. The bridge is wider and safer for all residents as well as Green Park businesses impacted by the bridge closure.

The early summer drought really helped Krupp make great headway on the road. By late summer 2011, the road project was again hampered but not by the weather. This time Missouri American Water Company needed to relocate their water lines. This work started in mid-August and took almost to the end of 2011 to complete. The work by the water company and bad weather earlier in the spring has forced the road project into 2012.

The road replacement work on the stretch of Green Park Road from Antrill Drive to Tesson Ferry will resume in April or whenever the winter weather breaks. Over the winter, Krupp will continue with retaining wall work as weather allows.

As of January 2012, Green Park Road is open from Union Road to Antrill Drive. Some of the noticeable changes on this stretch of road includes new stop signs at Green Park Road and Green Park Industrial Drive. There are also new stop signs at Cedarberry Place and Antrill Drive. You will notice that the roller coaster hills in front of the nursing home have been removed. The flashing red lights at Kohrs and Green Park Road have also been removed. Stop signs are now in place at this location.

I would highly recommend finding an alternate route for those trying to reach Tesson Ferry or Union Road via Green Park Road while the project continues. The St. Louis County Police Department has been be very visible and vigilant during each phase of the road project.

As we proceed into the new year with the project, Green Park Road should be open from Tesson Ferry to Union Road by June 2012 or sooner, weather permitting. When the road project is completed, it will safer for Green Park residents, residents that visit the park, people that work in our city, and people that drive though our city. Most importantly, the road will be much safer for Mehlville firefighters and paramedics and county police that will use Green Park Road.
