New Exhibit Tells Story of Civil War

A new exhibit at the tells the story of the Civil War in Missouri from start to finish—in art.

In oil paintings, sketches and watercolors, artist Dan Woodward takes patrons from the calm before the war, through the battles and ends at the memories and repercussions. 

“He really captures the vanishing landscapes of the time,” said Karen Maxville, the curator of the exhibit. “We wanted visitors to experience a theme, to re-spark visitation for the summer.”

Woodward, from Rolla, MO, said he hopes to accurately portray the light and atmosphere of a scene.

The 32 pieces will be at the site on Grant Road until July 20 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Missouri and Maxville said May was one of the busiest months since the park opened in 1994.
