Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are any number of "pink" goods available to stores throughout St. Louis. In many cases, a portion of the proceeds from sales is donated to charities or breast cancer-related facilities.
The St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, for example, which raises money region-wide to fund breast health and breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support programs, has its own Komen-approved merchandise website called ShopKomen.com.
Proceeds from the sale of the jewelry, watches, shirts and hundreds of other items help Komen support its mission in the St. Louis area. There also are dozens of fund-raising opportunities with the group.
One unique example of a "pink" item that will help Komen support its mission is a commitment made by country singer Garth Brooks. For every "Pink Edition" of Brooks' Ultimate Hits album sold, $10 will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Each CD is packaged with information to help women protect their breast health, and the health of people they love.
The NFL, its clubs, players and the NFL Players Association, and even the referees, have been visibly supporting breast cancer awareness by making pink a part of their uniform color scheme. There is even a breast cancer awareness page of products for St. Louis Rams merchandise that has a pink theme, called Pink Pride. There is no information on whether any of the proceeds from the Rams-themed items are donated to charity.
Two local companies are making an extra commitment to donate sales proceeds to charity.
Panera Bread, also known as Saint Louis Bread Company, is offering, during October, a special "pink ribbon" bagel. This year marks the 11th anniversary the company is offering special bagels as a way to raise funds for breast cancer research. A portion of proceeds from the specialty bagels sold in the company's bakery-cafes will be donated to the Siteman Cancer Center.
Pink ribbon bagels are made with cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, honey and brown sugar. They have a subtle vanilla flavor.
A local bakery with two locations - Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Cafe, 8509 Delmar Boulevard and Jilly's Cupcake Bar a-Go-Go, 1131 Colonnade Center - has concocted a whipped cream stuffed vanilla cupcake, topped with pink and white buttercream icing with pink ribbon sprinkles. The cupcake is called Missylicious for the Cure.
Two dollars from the sale of every cupcake sold will be split between two local organizations and their programs to help fight breast cancer: Missouri Baptist Medical Center’s Mom-a-Grams and the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program at Siteman Cancer Center.
There also will be donation boxes at both Jilly’s locations for the organizations.
