The Ghost Town Hunter Hits the Road Again

First I’ll go to the family place in the Ozarks. The camping and road equipment is checked out, cleaned, tested, repaired and packed into the truck. Some friends will meet me down there for some fishing and barbequing.

Then Tuesday or Wednesday it’s off to Nebraska. The travel route cuts through the southeast corner of Iowa. The interstate there was wiped out by a flood last summer but is now reopened.  While in Nebraska I’ll make sales calls and do some camping.

Then onto the Black Hills where there will be three weeks of book signings, interviews and sales stops. Have a book signing June 13th at Prairie Pages Bookstore in Rapid City. When there, I always stay at the Alex Johnson Hotel. Probably won’t stay in one of the haunted rooms this time. Whenever I do my cell phone goes nutty. The time, date, year and month all start to fluctuate on the cell phone, really.

After the Black Hills, I’ll go to Wyoming and zigzag across the state for a month or so. Have four book signings there and hope to do some mountain camping and ghost town hunting. After that, it’s onto Idaho then to eastern Oregon and Washington, then back to Idaho. This part of the trip will have four more book signings including one in Idaho’s State Capital building in Boise. By then it will be August. That month will be spent mountain climbing in central Idaho and ghost town hunting in Montana.

Central Idaho is especially beautiful and especially rugged. It comprises mostly of federally designated wilderness area. This includes the Buffalo Hump Mountain and the Wilderness of No Return. This last area includes a 165 mile drive over seven mountain ranges and no gas stations, in fact, no buildings, no people, just wilderness. This is the way I might return to Montana, through the Wilderness of No Return. 

After I cross the Big Sky Country of Montana, it’s back to the Black Hills. More book signings and hopefully the National Cave Association convention in Deadwood, South Dakota, Then to Pierre, South Dakota for a book signing. Followed by one more trip back to the Black Hills, this time to participate in a Mammoth Dig at Hot Springs, South Dakota. Along the way I will also drive through small portions of Colorado, Utah and North Dakota. Then back to the family place in the Ozarks to unload camping gear. Finally it’s October and I’m back in St. Louis.

Due to this road schedule this Blog series will not be posted on a regular basis over the summer. I will try to send in a couple of adventures or events occasionally. Then, come this fall, if the Patch allows, I will write the Blog on a regular basis again.
