Safety Tips

This Blog will be about safety, or more precisely the lack of it on some of my adventures.

While doing the numerous adventures I undertake, safety can be an issue. Therefore I frequently put safety tips in my books or on my website. When my family or friends read these, they interpret them as an attempt at dry humor. You see they know me better.

Readers of this blog might already think this you see, because in a previous blog I included a photo of me jumping off a cliff. This is not a safe act. So, safety tip #1:  Do not jump off cliffs. When you read my adventures you will notice they are frequently solo. I enjoy the true wilderness experience. I have taken this to what some may consider extreme.

I mountain climb solo. I have canoed solo, not just the only one in the canoe, but the only one on the river. Spending 3 days underground in a cave, solo. The list goes on...you get the idea. The recommended minimum number for safety in any adventures like these is four. So safety tip #2: Have more friends than Bruce.

During some of these adventures there are some times what one may call little mishaps, like when I fell while rock climbing in the Black Hills or when a big horn sheep chased me out of my camp in Wyoming. Safety tip #3: Things don’t always go as planned.

My mother is tired of hearing about these wildlife encounter stories. Especially the ones that ended with “and all I had with me was a hiking stick.” So mom gave me a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver for my outdoor adventures.

Another thing about some of these animal encounters: some of the animals are quite large. Animals like moose, elk, bears, buffalo. If you shot them with a .38 revolver you will only annoy them. Safety tip #4: Do not annoy large animals.

If you still haven’t caught on, in my books I claim part of my purpose in life is to serve as a bad example. When people say part of their role in life is to serve as a bad example, they probably really are. Safety tip #5: Stay away from bad examples.

One of the photos shows me holding onto the wing of an airplane in flight. This was during my college days. It is an example of me serving as a bad example. It is also safety tip #6: Please remain seated during the flight.

To my readers, Please do not try any of these stunts at home. Remember I am an untrained professional…the list goes on. So, safety tip #7: Instead of doing anything like this, just read about it from my books or blogs from the safety of your comfortable living room chair.

Next time:  An update on how the two books are coming along.
