Affton Chamber Barbecue Feeds Hungry, Wet, Chilly Masses

Despite the rain and chill, members of the Affton Chamber of Commerce—including your trusty editor—dished out tasty meat to go on Saturday to raise money for the Affton Days parade.

Saturday's long-planned barbecue turned out to be a cold and wet affair, but volunteers and customers braved the unseasonably nasty weather to support the fundraiser for September’s Affton Days Parade.

Working from tents set up in the parking lot of at Gravois Road and Valcour Avenue, chamber members cooked and filled orders for hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chicken, ribs and porksteaks. Equipment and know-how was provided by Kenrick’s Meats and Catering.

The chamber’s executive director Joan Edleson, who took orders and collected money all day, said business was slower this year than in the past—likely because of the rain.

Around 2 p.m., one car pulled up alongside the tent, the driver unwilling to go more than a few steps out into the drizzle.

Still, the crew boxing up orders stayed busy for most of the morning and afternoon as customers took home lunch and dinner.

The money raised will go to support the annual , a free event that will be held September 17. In remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, this year’s parade and festival will give special focus to honoring soldiers and emergency personnel.

Your trusty local editor volunteered at the barbecue from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., bagging up and handing off orders with gusto. I was assisted by Patch Regional Editor Kurt Greenbaum, who served out the brats, ribs and porksteaks.
