Is Affton Too Good For Value Village? vs. Free Market: Where Do You Stand?

County Councilman Steve Stenger wants to block Value Village from moving to Affton.

Value Village states it's being forced out of its Shrewsbury location in Kenrick Plaza by the incoming Walmart development.

Robert West, president of Value Village stores wants to move it to a nearby space at 10040-42 Gravois Road in Affton, but St. Louis County Councilman Steve Stenger is quoted in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article saying he doesn't think a thrift store is a good fit for a community on the rise.

“I grew up in Affton, and I want what’s best for it and I don’t believe Value Village is a good fit for the area,” Stenger said.

The space on Gravois isn't zoned for sale of used goods, and Stenger has until May 12 to change his mind or the move won't happen.

Do you agree with Stenger, or with this writer in the Post-Dispatch, who calls Stenger a "minor public official," and says Stenger's position is government intervention in the free market?
