Garavaglia’s: Two-Part Operation, Deli and Specialty Grocery

Whether you're grabbing lunch or picking up groceries, Garavaglia's Market in Oakville has it covered.

Italian food specialties are easily found on the hill, “The Hill” Italian neighborhood in St. Louis, but the little hill in Oakville at Telegraph at Erb roads where you’ll find Garavaglia’s Market, whose deli sandwiches are a specialty.

Garavaglia’s features Boar's Head meats and cheeses in addition to products from local sausages makers as Oldani, Piekutowski’s and G&W.

Customers can custom order sandwiches or pick from 17 different combos such as the Oakville Special, a mega sub with roast beef, ham, salami, Provel, Cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and horseradish sauce.  The Dagwood, another high-stacked sandwich appeals to hearty appetites. Cards fans may be enticed by The Red Bird, a special sammie of Salsalito turkey, pepper cheese, pepperoncini, lettuce and tomato. Traditionalists will find the Tavern Ham & Swiss a good bet. The Philadelphian was my pick. a hot roast beef, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and dill pickle chips.

After grabbing lunch customers can shop for supper. Garavaglia’s stocks Italian specialty groceries that include Italian imported olive oils, pastas and tomato sauces. And considering  its limited space there's an impressive wine selection.

The freezer case sports a variety of stuffed pastas as ravioli and tortellini, pastries and grated cheeses. Hand-cut steaks, boneless chicken and pork steaks are available daily from the fresh meat case.

Service at the walk-up counter is fast and the service staff is friendly and helpful.  Dine-in options are limited to a few tall-top tables. Additional table seating is available on the patio, depending on the weather and the number of unoccupied umbrella tables.

Combo sandwiches are large enough to share and are prices are affordability priced, $3.79 to $ 5.79. Chips, sides and sodas will add a few bucks to the check.
