The Fantasy Shop Celebrates Free Comic Book Day

The Fantasy Shop's South County location on Baptist Church Road gave away free comics and 30 cent back issues in honor of nationwide Free Comic Book Day.

Since 2002, children and adults alike have been flocking to their local comic book shop on the first Saturday of May for free comics.

Diamond Comic Distributors works in conjunction with major and independent comic publishers to provide the free comics, hoping to get more people interested in the medium.

This year the Fantasy Shop, which has several locations around the St. Louis area, opened to a long line of people waiting in excitement at their location on Baptist Church Road at Lindbergh Boulevard and spent the rest of the day packed with people.

"It's been awesome," Fantasy Shop employee Dan Kinsella said. "It's really cool to see 10 to 15 people in the store at a time all day long."

In celebration of Fantasy Shop's 30 year anniversary, the shop also offered many of its back issues for 30 cents.

"I've bought over 100 comics today," said Antonio Sanchez Jr. of South County. "I started the day here, and then went to Fantasy Shop in Maplewood. And now I'm back here for more."
