Bowling Benefit Sunday for Affton Man with Cancer

Money raised will help pay Mike Duerr's medical bills.

A bowling benefit supporting Mike Duerr, of Affton, will be held 3 - 7 p.m. Sunday at Saratoga Lanes, 2725 Sutton Blvd. in Maplewood.

Duerr has been battling lymphoma since January. According to his sister Lynn Cummings, who is organizing the benefit, he has undergone chemo and radiation therapy. Cummings has recently donated bone marrow to her brother.

Money raised from the benefit will be used to help pay for Duerr’s mounting medical bills and to offset the three months Duerr has spent without income while hospitalized.

The benefit will include nine-pin no-tap bowling for $40 per person. The tournament pays prizes to the top five competitors. The event will also feature a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

“My brother has always been known for his hair. Through the treatments he has lost his hair, but his spirit remains the most strong and beautiful,” Cummings told Patch in an email. “He cries and thanks me for saving his life (I gave the bone morrow), but I continue to tell him how much he has changed my life. I now take everyday as a blessing and enjoy every minute and every person. I no longer let ‘little’ things make me sweat.

“Mike is strong and never stops. We are going to beat this disease, it's the longer financial aspect that worries me for Mike. You can tell that this is going to bother him for some time to come.”
