Know Your Parks: Mathilda Welmering

This summer, "Patch" is bringing you the great outdoors with a closer look at the parks of South County.

Located at 8301 Mathilda Ave., in Affton, the 6-acre Mathilda Welmering Park adds an extra charm to the neighborhood.

According to the St. Louis County Parks website, like a lot of St. Louis County Parks, the Mathilda Welmering Park was funded by the 1959 Bonds Issue and opened in 1961.

A neighborhood park from its roots, the park was named after two cross streets, which in turn were names after two families in the neighborhood. Mathilda was named for Mathilda Kerth, daughter of a farmer who owned 120 acres between Gravois and Heege, and Welmering was named for James Welmering, who purchased land from the Kerths.Β
