Staying Healthy in the Summer Sun

I love summer but not necessarily the heat.

Hello Everyone! I'm sorry I haven't blogged in awhile, I took the first week of summer off and have been out of town. I am now in the swing of summer. As I was working in my mother's yard last week I was reminded of two important things: 1)  It's really hot and I should carry my sunscreen and water.  2)  Thank goodness I'm not allergic to bees.

For those of you who don't know me, I preach to my school kids about not using the tanning bed and that they should wear sunscreen. I did use sunscreen but remember, it comes off with sweat or water. You need to REAPPLY it. Please remind your children, especially the small fry, as they are more susceptible to burns and their skin is so delicate.

Also, remind your teens that a little "Vitamin D" is good but too much will cause them to burn and they won't look pretty when they have blisters or peel.  Even being outside for a short amount of time can cause heat related illness.  Drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light colored, loose clothing, a hat, and sunglasses.  Pace yourself.  Symptoms of heat related illness are: flushed, red face, confusion, fatigue, nausea, headache, cramping, weakness, nausea. For mild symptoms, usually sitting in air conditioning and drinking sips of cool water will make you feel better. If symptoms are severe, call for help. That's it for the fun in the sun. Next blog I'll tell you about the bees.
