Save Grant's Farm: One Year Later

An update on the effort to preserve one of our favorite places.

One year ago this week, the National Park Service released its reconnaissance study on its potential acquisition of Grant's Farm.  Throughout this year, our community based effort supporting this possibility made great strides.  The Save Grant's Farm effort has gained nearly 15,000 Facebook fans, representing every State and 35 countries; we have 3,500 signatures supporting the National Park Service's goal of long-term preservation of the Farm, and the State of Missouri, along with dozens of municipalities and organizations have passed resolutions supporting the cause.  We've marched in parades, been on TV and in print media.  But most importantly, we've been proactive in delivering our message; we love Grant's Farm and do not want to lose it.  Ever.

So what’s next?

We keep promoting the long-term preservation of Grant’s Farm.  More often than not, an opportunity to change a decision passes before the public is aware and able to act, and it is imperative we keep this issue in the public eye.  Keep posting your pictures on our Facebook page, submit a comment on our Website, and sign the petition!  Read the comments on our Website; no other attraction, historical or otherwise, in St. Louis has the generational and heartfelt love as Grant’s Farm.
We also keep enjoying one of the city’s most loved attractions. It’s the first place a family visits when returning home, it’s the place where the picture on the refrigerator of the grandkids feeding the baby goats was taken, and it’s the place where we go on summer day and feel like we never left home.  Face it, numbers count.  Let’s ensure that Grant’s Farm attendance figures increase instead of declining.

And let’s not lose sight of why we have this glorious sanctuary.   Here at savegrantsfarm.org, we thank the Busch family for their generosity in opening their home and sharing their greatest treasure with us.  Gussie Busch not only gave us Grant’s Farm, but he also preserved and shared with us Grant’s Cabin and numerous other Ulysses S. Grant and Civil War memorabilia that could easily been lost without his foresight.  We want to preserve Grant’s Farm as much for them as we do for us.

For the upcoming year, let’s continuing gathering support.  Urge your friends to sign the petition and join our Facebook effort, and we will continue to update you on any developments, good or bad.  Most importantly, enjoy Grant’s Farm.  And be sure to visit the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site right next door.  Together, the attractions provide some of the best documentation of two of America’s most famous families.  And it’s right in our backyard.
