His daughter, Terry Boyer, said even though Standfuss was color-blind, he got the top score in the Navy signal corps. He served in World War II in the early 1940s.

Standfuss had been a member of Bible Baptist Church since 1975, when he and his wife joined. His daughter, Terry Boyer, said her parents had been “more than faithful members the whole time.”

Boyer is now the church’s secretary, a job she took over when her mother died. Her mother was also a soloist in the church.

She said Standfuss’ Christianity, “was the main thing for him, living for God. Aside from that he was a stone mason.”

She said he set the blue tiles in the Living World Exhibit and helped build the serpentine wall at the St. Louis Zoo.

“All the big buildings that were done in the 50s and 60s and 70s and 80s, my dad worked on a bunch of those,” she said. “To me, that’s cool.’”

She said he also built freestanding stone fireplaces for friends inside their homes, and he also built the home that she lives in, in Hillsboro, in 1993.

Boyer said her dad repaired the outside of the church whenever it needed attention.

“Anytime church needed work done, he’d get in there and do it,” she said.
