Man Charged As ‘Same-Coat-Bandit’ in Two Bank Robberies

The man was indicted last March on bank robbery charges in Affton.

A St. Louis man was charged Thursday with two bank robberies, one in Webster Groves and another in Clayton, after earning similar charges in Affton in March.

Nicholas J. Hummel, 29, of the 5700 block of Loran Avenue in St. Louis, was charged Thursday with first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree robbery.

The person caught on video in the robberies had been dubbed the ‘Same-Coat Bandit’ because he wore the same tan coat in several robberies.

Police reported that Hummel robbed Reliance Bank at 8083 Watson Road in Webster Groves on Feb. 8. A bank employee told police he reached into his pocket, where they saw a metal object believed to be a firearm.

At one point, Hummel jumped the counter and told a teller, “You need to hurry or I’m gonna hurt you,” according to the police report.

reported Hummel also demanded money from two tellers in Enterprise Bank at 150 North Meramec Road in Clayton at about 3:40 p.m. Jan. 25. He did not display a weapon. He is charged with the two second-degree robberies in the Enterprise Bank incident.

Police said Hummel’s cell phone records put him in the areas at the time of the robberies.

Bond was set at $100,000.
