Police Investigating Affton-Area Carjacking on Dana Avenue

The armed suspect demanded a woman's car, sped off, led police on a short chase and then crashed the vehicle near the River des Peres, police say. He then fled the area.

St. Louis County police are investigating a carjacking that happened Wednesday night in the 9100 block of Dana Avenue in Wilbur Park.

Police received a call just before 8 p.m. about a man with a gun who approached a 47-year-old woman as she arrived home and demanded her black Mazda MPV minivan, said Off. Randy Vaughn, a department spokesman. The man sped off in the car, which contained the woman's purse.

Officers spotted the vehicle at Bayless and Interstate 55, he said. A short chase ensued before the suspect crashed the car at Carondelet by River des Peres. The man then bolted from the scene.

"We had the canines out searching, and we would have had the helicopters out if the weather conditions had been different," Vaughn said. "But we couldn't find him."

The suspect is described as a man possibly Hispanic with some facial hair, he said. The man was wearing a dark sweatshirt with a design on the front. The gun was found at the site of the crash.
