Police: Man Catches Copper Thief, Shoots Him with Shotgun

The shooter followed the copper thief from Affton to the Dutchtown South neighborhood of St. Louis City before confronting him, police said.

A man caught a 55-year-old man stealing copper from his Affton property Friday night, so he followed him into the Dutchtown South neighborhood of St. Louis City and shot him in the shoulder with a shotgun, police said.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police arrested the shooter on suspicion of assault, but charges have not yet ben filed.

The Affton property owner, described by police as a 31-year-old white male, followed the man he suspected of stealing copper from Affton to the area of S. Broadway and Gasconade in St. Louis City.Β 

He tried to detain the man, but they got into a short physical confrontation that ended in gunfire around 9 p.m. January 11.
