Shrewsbury Man Breaks Into Home, Officers Trap Suspect On Roof, Police Say

Maplewood Police said William Whaley crawled out onto the home's roof when officers arrived.

A neighbor reported seeing a man breaking into a Maplewood home, and when officers arrived the man crawled out onto the home’s roof, police said. The man eventually surrendered, Maplewood Police said.

William Whaley, 32, of the 7100 block of Murdoch Avenue in Shrewsbury, was charged Friday with second-degree burglary and felony theft.

Maplewood Police said officers responded to a reported burglary in the 3200 block of South Big Bend Boulevard. The officers arrived while Whaley was still inside. Whaley then climbed out onto the roof with a black duffel bag in his hand, they said.

Eventually, Whaley surrendered and came down from the roof, police said. The homeowner identified several pieces of gold jewelry found inside the black duffel bag, according to a court document.

Whaley is being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center. Bail was set at $15,000.
