Shrewsbury police received a delayed theft report from a resident in the 7400 block of Lansdowne Avenue. The elderly victim reported that on May 17 he was contacted at his residence by a man who claimed to be employed by a utility company. The suspect told the victim they were going to be burying electrical lines and that they needed to go through his backyard. The suspect asked the victim to accompany him to the rear yard, behind a shed, where the suspect told him this was the area of the yard where the lines would be buried. The victim said he was in the backyard with the suspect for approximately 20 minutes. At that time, the suspect told the victim he needed to retrieve something from his vehicle and would be back in a few minutes. The suspect asked the victim to wait for him in the backyard. After waiting a short time, the victim walked to the front of his residence to look for the suspect.  After not seeing anyone, the victim went inside and discovered jewelry, checks and other items missing. The victim stated he did not initially contact the police because he was embarrassed. A similar incident occurred in a neighboring community. In that incident, the suspect identified himself as being “with the electric company.” A second suspect apparently went inside the victim’s residence while the victim was distracted by the first suspect. Jewelry as well as other items were taken.
