Suck It Up 5K Tests Endurance at Night - In the Mud

Local police and firefighters will compete in an obstacle course in Hillsboro, an endurance contest with plenty of barriers to overcome.

A unique race is taking shape June 9 at a course on Bridle Creek Farm in Hillsboro that will test the endurance, toughness and competitive urges of those who want to prove their mettle in a challenging event.

It's called the Suck It Up 5K run and consists of an obstacle course on a wooded layout. Participants must overcome a variety of barriers along the way, including cargo nets, tunnels, water slides, giant walls and zip lines. The Suck It Up 5K is run at night. Through the mud.

The race motto is: "No Excuses. No Quitting. Suck It Up!"

Although many of the participants include police officers, firefighters and other first responders, the event is open to all who are 18 or older.

The list of local agencies testing their endurance include

  • St. Louis County Police Department
  • Cedar Hill Fire Department
  • Franklin County Sheriff's Department
  • Meramec EMS
  • North Jefferson County Ambulance District
  • Olivette Fire Department
  • Collinsville Fire Department
  • University City Fire Department
  • Hillsboro Fire Department
  • Goldman Fire Department

Awards will be given to the top three men and women in each of three age divisions, as well as to the person with the craziest costume and the person with the best glowing gear. Each participant will receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt and a NightOps headlamp at the start of the race.

Following the event will "party entertainment all night long" according to the Suck It Up 5K website. Participants over 21 will receive their first beer free.

Entry fees for the race is $75 through June 7, or $85 on site until 7 p.m. June 9.
