Ongoing Affton Yard Sale Breaks Laws, Raises Tempers

A resident seems to be thumbing his nose at county ordinances.

The Affton house at 6313 Heege Road. Road, on the corner of Heege and Mackenzie, has been cited for holding an ongoing yard sale, among other things.

Eric Fey, county administrative assistant for the 5th county council district seat heard about it from a member of the Affton Community Involvement Association.

The property owner was cited by a county neighborhood preservation inspector on Oct. 4.

The inspector cited issues such as a car parked on the grass, open storage of consumer goods, and an ongoing yard sale, which is prohibited under county ordinances.

The owner has until Nov. 4 to comply with each point raised in the notice, otherwise a court summons will be issued, according to Fey.

Since that citation, the offender has brought in additional bulk items to the site, according to ACIA president Larry Stone. (When this photo was taken, it appeared that’s what the owner was doing.)

“I am wondering why the inspector gave him 30-days to cease and desist. Does he get to continue running a flea market until November 4th?” Stone asked Fey.

"He's thumbing his nose at St. Louis County while we, in Affton, have to put up with his new Jefferson County style flea market!" Stone said.

"I am hoping not to hear that he can keep on doing this until Nov. 4th...because I can assure you he will continue to do it until that date. If he has been enabled by the generosity of an existing ordinance..the ordinance needs to be amended. If he has been enabled by the generosity of an inspector and not the provisions of the existing ordinance, that raises another element of concern."
