Rock Hill Considers, Then Drops, Plan for E-Billboard Like Affton's

The Rock Hill U-Gas has withdrawn its request for an electronic message board for its gas station and convenience store located at the northeast corner of Manchester and McKnight roads.

The U-Gas, which is currently under construction, asked the city's Board of Adjustment for a variance to permit the message board at a recent meeting/public hearing on the matter. Currently, the city does not allow electronic message boards.

Affton has its own electronic billboard, which stirred up some controversy as it went up. The Affton Community Involvement Association asked 5th District County Councilman Patrick Dolan to outlaw similar signs.

U-Gas withdrew its petition after City Clerk Jennifer Yackley explained the criteria that the Board of Adjustment was to use in order to make its decision and providing staff's recommendations based upon those criteria.

In an email to constituents, Rock Hill Alderman Philip Scherry said U-Gas will be working to have the city change the sign code to allow these types of signs.  

"I will continue to stand against electronic reader board signs, but need your support to let the rest of the board know what you think," Scherry said in the email.
