Shrewsbury CDBG Hearing, Kenrick Redevelopment Open House

There is an exciting night of governmental activity planned at Shrewsbury's city hall Tuesday.

Tuesday evening is holding a public hearing on community development block grant funds, a board of alderman work session and an informational open house on the Kenrick Plaza redevelopment project.

The night of governmental activity begins at 6 p.m. with a public hearing on the allocation of money from the 2012 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The CDBG is a long-running program by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, giving local governments funds to pursue community improvement projects, affordable housing, anti-poverty programs and infrastructure development. At the hearing residents are invited to offer their input on the distribution of these funds.

At 7 p.m., the board of aldermen will hold a work session, in which it will work on allocating the CDBG funds. The board will also update citizens on the status of the Kenrick Plaza redevelopment project.

Finally, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. the gathering will split into three groups—one for each ward—and hold open houses on the Kenrick project. In these smaller groups, residents will be able to discuss the redevelopment with their respective aldermen.

The Kenrick redevelopment plans include a controversial Walmart Supercenter. Patch has been following the debate over the project. Here are some highlights from our recent coverage:
