The election results have been certified in favor of disincorporation

The first things to go after the vote came in were the stickers. St. George residents no longer need a “city sticker” on their cars to avoid a small fine.

The rest of the city’s functions, however, are still waiting to be put to rest.

The next step in the transition process now sits with the St. Louis County Council, which must draft and pass legislation to dissolve the city. According to a letter sent out by soon-to-be-former St. George Mayor Carmen Wilkerson who led the charge for disincorporation, the expected date of disincorporation is Dec. 31.

In the meantime, St. George’s city government will continue to administer services such as re-occupancy permits and snow removal.

"We are blazing new trails and admittedly learning as we go, but we are committed to seeing the job through to be sure there is no interruption of services during this transition,” Wilkerson said in her letter, assuring residents that the city had a contract in place for snow removal through the coming winter.

The through the process has been discussed for much of the last year, exact details of how to deal with St. George’s city assets are still fuzzy. A trustee will likely be appointed this month to make decisions about the town’s small park and the house that has served as its city hall. This week the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote about how this situation has been handled in rare similar cases, such as Peerless which disincorporated in 1999.
