Claire McCaskill Announces Her Support for Marriage Equality; Same Week as Equality Day in Missouri

March 27 is not only Equality Day in Missouri, but also the day that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal to DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) in the United States v. Windsor.

Monday, March 25, 2013  (Jefferson City, Missouri) – Last night, Sen. Claire McCaskill announced her support for marriage equality on her Tumblr blog stating, “I have come to the conclusion that our government should not limit the right to marry based on who you love.” Her announcement comes during a week of momentum statewide and nationally.

A.J. Bockelman, Executive Director of PROMO praises McCaskill saying, "As we have seen with the President, our own Sen. Claire McCaskill has evolved on marriage equality. We are proud to have her represent fair minded Missourians in the Senate."

In Missouri, same-sex marriage is banned by a constitutional amendment, and people can legally be fired from their job if they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). This Wednesday is PROMO’s annual Equality Day in which individuals from across the state come together in support of pro-LGBT legislation. The annual Lobby Day is about protecting all Missourians from employment and housing discrimination, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, safeguarding all youth from bullying in schools, and standing up for LGBT parents and their families in Missouri.

Since the first LGBT Lobby Day in 1990, much has changed nationally. March 27 is not only Equality Day in Missouri, but also the day that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal to DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) in the United States v. Windsor. Together, PROMO and other organizations are having rallies in support of the case and claiming DOMA is unconstitutional. Before the public speaks to legislators at the Capitol in Jefferson City, there will be a rally at 10:30am in the Capitol rotunda. All are encouraged to join.
