Affton Gathers to Honor Great Teachers

The Affton Chamber of Commerce held its Exceptional Educators dinner for teachers in the 63123 zip code.

Teachers, administrators, elected officials and local business leaders drank and dined together Thursday at the Ninth annual Exceptional Educators Dinner at Orlando Gardens.

The dinner is organized each year by the to honor a great teacher from each school in the 63123 zip code.

“It’s nice to get that pat on the back,” said honoree Woody Babb, who teaches art and coaches volleyball at Bayless Jr. High School.

The and school districts each also chose one of their school exceptional educators to be their district teacher of the year—Karen Schuering and Kelly O'Connor.

“We are thrilled to be able to honor educators from all over the Affton area and bring them all together,” Bayless Superintendent Maureen Clancy-May said.

“It’s really nice of the chamber to do,” said Affton Super Steve Brotherton.

At Affton the honorees were named by committees of their peers and honored first last year at the SOAR awards.

Bayless uses a similar system, with a committee choosing a district educator from among the school teachers of the year.

“We have high standards,” Clancy-May said of the selection process. “Ours is very competitive.”

This year’s honorees and their schools are:

  • Bayless Junior High School: Woody Babb
  • Bayless High School: Jonathan Robards
  • Cor Jesu Academy: Colleen O’Brien
  • Dressel School: Michael Kuhn
  • Lutheran High School South: Debbie Davis
  • Our Lady of Providence Catholic School: Karen Ganey
  • St. Dominic Savio Catholic School: Christie Schneider
  • Seven Holy Founders Catholic School: Marilyn Effinger.
