Blind Affton High Golfer Honored

Daniel Crum received an award for his tenacity, presented by Mike Bush.

For twelve years the Saint Louis Sports Commission has been honoring athletes, coaches, and teams who exemplify the best in sportsmanship throughout the year. This year the awards, held at the Edward Jones Auditorium, honored sixteen individuals from across the United States who went above and beyond as athletes to do the right thing.

Representing the Saint Louis region was legally blind sophomore Daniel Crum, who plays on the school golf team.

In spite of brain tumors on his optic nerve that left him partially blind as a child, Crum has always wanted to be involved in sports. “I try not to focus on my disability,” said Crum. “Instead I just focus on my golf.”

Aside from assistance spotting the ball and being told the distance and direction to the hole, Crum receives no special help or treatment. He plays the sport with integrity. His perseverance in the face of adversity made him a perfect candidate for this year’s awards.
