Bus Routes Back for Bayless Schools

Students living a half-mile from their Bayless School District school can ride the bus for the first time in two years.

For the first time in two years, Bayless School District can afford bus transportation for students.

Voters passed Proposition B last year, a 92-cent tax levy bringing in an total of $1,288,000 for the 2012-2013 school year. That new funding means Bayless can afford a bus route this year after cutting it in 2010 to save money.

The district approved a three-year contract July 9, 2012, with First Student, Inc. to transport students to and from school. Each year of transportation costs the school district about $260,000.

More students will have access to bus transportation this time around, said superintendent Ron Tucker. The district has identified more "hazardous" areas, meaning neighborhoods where walking isn't safe for children on their own, such as along the east side of I-55.

The new routes haven't been announced yet.
