Post 3/11 Japan and Contemporary Media

  • Dr. Ian Condry will speak on Post 3/11 Japan and Contemporary Media.  Dr. Condry is Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He specializes on media, popular culture, and globalization with a focus on contemporary Japan and the US.  He is the author of the highly influential study Hip-Hop Japan: Rap and the Paths of Cultural Globalization (Duke University Press, 2006).  His study The Soul of Anime: Collaborative Creativity and Japan’s Media Success Story is forthcoming.  In his lecture Dr. Condry will discuss the transformative power of “radical recontextualization” in today’s world.  He will focus on the impact of the recent “triple disaster” in Japan and possible lessons from hip-hop, anime, and more.
