How Lindbergh Gave Back This Year

In remarkable acts of giving back, the Lindbergh school community raised more than $87,000 for others over the past year, and volunteered countless hours of service work for charity.

The district’s board of education commended the thoughtful—and generous—students and educators Tuesday, during a regular board meeting at the district's Early Childhood Education center in Sappington.

Standouts:

• Students, staff, families and neighbors raised $2,459 to help victims of the tornado that struck Sunset Hills, Fenton and Crestwood on Dec. 31;

• 40 Lindbergh High seniors volunteer as part of the tornado clean up effort in Sunset Hills;

• Lindbergh rallied again on May 22 to raise $3,065 to help the victims of the tornado that struck Joplin during a week-long fundraiser;

• the annual Backstoppers concert on Nov. 8 raised $5,451 for families of emergency responders killed in the line of duty;

• Lindbergh High cheerleaders raised more than $3,300 for Susan GT. Komen for the Cure during the first Pink Out football game on Sept. 10;

• the Flyerettes dance team Kicked for a Cure raising $2,200 by performing 1,000 kicks,

• A-Plus students at Lindbergh High donated more than 4,500 hours during the summer tutoring grade school children;

• the skills/transition class collected $3,000 worth of toys and donations for Toys for Tots in December;

• about 40 students on the football team and Green Machine shaved their heads in honor of classmate Jake Franzel, who is battling bone cancer, and raised nearly $8,000 to support childhood cancer research;

• Truman Elementary School raised $8,866 for International Crisis Aid to assist an orphanage in Haiti, $3,171 to help local tornado victims, and $11,249 for classmate Jacob Swiderski, who is undergoing treatment for a cancerous brain tumor;

• Lindbergh elementary students raised $20,726 for the American Heart Association during the annual Jump Rope for Heart;

• Kennerly Elementary students raised more than $15,000 in four years for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of their fifth grade classmate Adam Bristoe;

• Sappington’s Recycling Team recycled 4.84 tons of paper in March to celebrate Earth Day, and 33.59 tons total of paper in 2010;

• Truman fifth grader Naomi Leasck has raised more than $3,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the past two years by collecting pledges for each "save" the hockey goalie makes at the net; and

• Truman students adopted 28 families for the holidays providing a host of gift cards, household items and cash donations.
