Restaurant Inspections: Church Schools Edition

We roundup reports on how restaurants and other local institutions fair on county health inspections.

Patch examined inspection reports in Mehlville, Oakville and Affton from Mar. 1 until Mar. 15. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published on the website of the St. Louis County Health Department

Restaurants and institutions are rated on a scale of A to C, with A being the best. Inspectors also give a score indicating the percentage of compliance with inspection standards.

On this special Wednesday Bonus Edition, we are bringing you inspection results from a number of local churches and private schools.

Unless otherwise noted, all inspections were conducted on a routine basis.

Comments: Found students/teachers/administration walking through cooking areas of kitchen prep to get to rear of kitchen for access of ice machine by themselves. Inspector spoke with principal of school and head of kitchen staff about possible Hep A problem (from passers through) and informed ice must be dispensed by kitchen staff or use self dispensing machine to get ice. The use of the ice machine was to stop immediately. Both agreed and students where told to use fountain machine dispenser.

Comments: The person(s) in charge during the inspection did not possess a valid food protection certification (2-101.11). Cook only employee present—no sanitation training, did not have thermometer, did not know cooking temps for chicken, had to ask inspector for thermometer. Found food in steam table not being reheated due to being leftover. Cook did not know of this process nor temp for food, not checking temps at all. Multi-door refrigeration unit had iced over pipes inside, food chamber with watery liquid flowing heavily out of fan box and ceiling into food. Date marking not found on over 65% of chicken. Handsink still blocked and retaining water from fish fry.
