Rogers Middle School Students Serve Affton Community

Check out the 22 groups Rogers students participate in to make Affton a better place.

Students at Rogers Middle School are getting an opportunity to learn about others and serve their community. Beginning this month, the school has implemented regular service learning days, known as SWERVE Days, which stands for Service With Education, Respect, Vitality and Energy.

“We want to make sure that students know that they can make a difference in the world by their actions,” said Jeff Remelius, principal of Rogers Middle School. “Our hope is that students will find a love for volunteerism and continue their work outside of this time with the school.”

Students serve in one of 22 available SWERVE groups, which include:

  • A Day in My Shoes, working on teaching kids about differences
  • Affton Christian Food Pantry, helping the food pantry collect food and other necessary tasks
  • Affton’s Oakland House, helping the Affton Historical Society in a variety of ways
  • Book Buddies, students read to younger kids at Affton Early Childhood, Mesnier Primary School and Gotsch Intermediate School
  • Building Green, building a shed for the garden, and bat and bird houses for other organizations
  • Fuel Up to Play 60, working to help students get more active
  • Garden Project, renovating the Rogers Middle School garden by building raised beds, and then maintaining the garden
  • Got Freedom?, working with Veterans groups, including the Honor Flight program
  • Green Team, making Rogers Middle School more environmentally-friendly
  • Paw Print Society, working with area animal organizations
  • Random Acts of Kindness, working with community organizations to show kindness
  • Sewing for Service, students are sewing aprons for the Affton Early Childhood Center and walker bags for senior centers
  • Strong Caring Cougars, making cards and other decorations to say thank you
  • Support Our Soldiers, planning different ways that they can assist soldiers, including a visit to the USO
  • Teaching Adults Technology, students will be leading classes for adults needing help with technology
  • Tour of Affton Charity Run, students are planning this first annual charity run to be held in May
  • Toy Story, making storybooks and puppets for area children’s hospitals
  • United Way, a variety of service projects designed by the United Way, including a trip to Powder Valley
  • Waterfall, installing a water feature at Rogers Middle, which will be used by science classes to teach erosion
  • Where Everybody Belongs (WEB), student ambassadors producing different videos about the school and will serve as guides for new students
  • Welcome to Rogers, performing campus beautification projects
