Whiz Kids: Lindbergh Students Excelling on Many Levels

Students in the Lindbergh Schools have racked up a variety of accomplishments recently.

From high school to elementary school, Lindbergh students have been winning awards and raising funds for worthwhile charities.

Lindbergh Board Honors Eagle Scout

Lindbergh High School sophomore Brent Croxton, recently earned his Eagle Scout badge and was honored at the March Board of Education meeting. To earn the Eagle designation, Brent organized a service project to collect 400 old, worn American flags and organized a ceremony to retire them properly. Eagle Scouts must plan, develop and lead others in a service project that benefits any religious institution, school or community.

Truman Student Qualifies for State Geography Bee

 Truman Middle School seventh-grader Sam Rehg, recently qualified for the  state level of the National Geography Bee. Sam was the first place winner in his school’s geography bee, and then took a written test to qualify for the state competition, which will be in Columbia in April.

Truman Musicians Score High

The Truman Middle School Orchestra students, came home with high marks following the Large Group Middle School Orchestra Festival March 12. The sixthth grade received a Excellent rating, and grades seven and eight scored a Superior rating.

Math-A-Thon Raises Almost $4,000 for St. Jude’s

Truman Middle School students recently participated in the Math-A-Thon education-based fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The building as a whole raised $3,917.37, with the two sixth-grade teams raising more than $1,500 each! The Math-A-Thon includes free math curriculum for schools, which students complete after obtaining sponsorships from family and friends.

LHS Journalism Student Wins $1,000 Scholarship

Lindbergh High School senior Michael Rich, received the Bruce Schneider Memorial Scholarship at this year’s Sponsors of School Publications Conference at Webster University. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a St. Louis area journalism student who has made a difference in his or her high school journalism program.  Each school in the area is only allowed to submit one application. 

The following students also received awards at the conference:

  • Samantha Fisher- Yearbook Sports Design, Honorable Mention; and Yearbook Student Life Design, Honorable Mention

  • 2011 Spirit Yearbook - Superior Overall Rating

Clothing Swap Gives Kids Free Smiles

Sappington Elementary School hosted a clothing swap March 9 to raise money for “Give Kids a Smile.” Parents donated clothing items to sell for 25 cents each, and all proceeds went to the nonprofit organization, which provides free dental care for students in need. Sappington nurse Lee Ann Barrett coordinated the event.

Kennerly Students Head to Jr. FIRST World Expo

Kennerly Elementary School third-graders Anna Anderson, Lydia Brinker, Natalie Haberstroh, Aubrey Schraut, Caroline Sluss and Christina Yepez have been chosen to participate in the World Expo for the Jr. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League at the Edward Jones Dome on April 27.

The all-day event will include teams from 40 countries, grades 4-12. Teams will have the opportunity to show their work from this year’s challenge, which was called “Snack Attack!” Students had to build a LEGO project based on their experiences learning about food distribution and safety.

Students Named Finalists in Express the Music Competition

The following Lindbergh middle school students who were chosen as finalists in Express the Music 2012, presented by the Saint Louis Symphony Volunteer Association and sponsored by the Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis:

  • Emma Fore, sixth grade; and Kaley Burroughs, eighth grade, Truman Middle School
  • Selma Kuduzovic, seventh grade; and Libby Dorsey, sixth grade, Sperreng Middle School.

The students were among 48 finalists, chosen from nearly 3,000 participants in the 2012 Express the Music writing competition. They will be honored April 10 during a ceremony at Powell Hall.
