Cor Jesu's Jill Whitman Takes 3,200 Meter Run at State

Whitman, who was runner-up in the event last year as a sophomore, said she was a little surprised by her own performance. This is her first state title.

Good news spread on Cor Jesu Academy St. Louis' Facebook page as it was announced incoming senior Jill Whitman recently placed 1st in the state at the Class 4 3,200-meter run at the Missouri Girls Track and Field Championships in May.

Jill's time was 10:51.29, which she said was 15 seconds better than her personal best.

Jill told Mo Mile Split she opted to start the run relaxed and even-paced in an effort to find her opening during the second half of the trek.

“I don’t have the best 100 meter kick in the world, so I didn’t want it to come down to that,” she told the online runner publication. “I talked to my coaches and the idea was to stay in the pack and if I felt it to start pushing the last 700 meters.

Jill said she wanted to give it her all the last lap, and that's surely what happened. She ran a final lap at 1:11 claiming her first state title.
