Early Season Home Games Highlight Affton Football Schedule

The Cougars open their season on Friday, Aug. 26 at home against Union.

With fall practice starting Monday and the first day of school slated for Aug. 17, the Athletics Department began the official start of its 2011-2012 sporting year by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen football schedules.

The Cougars, who will play a combined 24 games in 2011, are all set for their first official training camp workouts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

The varsity team, under coach Dan Oliver, will be the first to take the field this season, beginning with a difficult home game against Union (MO) High on at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. The Wildcats were 11-2 last year and advanced to the Class 4 state quarterfinals before they lost to eventual state champion Webb City.

Union is bringing back its standout trio of players in quarterback Chris Savage, running back Ryan Baser and wide receiver Ryan Coons. They had a combined 46 touchdowns in 2010, and lead a team that is expected to be ranked among the top 10 in the state when the preseason rankings come out later this month.

The JV team will also play Union, but that will be a road game at Union on at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29 .

The following week, all three Cougars teams will play at home against Priory, with the varsity hosting the Rebels on Sept. 2, the JV doing the same on Sept. 3 and the freshmen hosting their season opener on Sept. 7.

The third week of the season brings the start of the Suburban East Conference schedule for Affton, which will play its first road game of 2011 on Sept. 9 at Clayton High’s Gay Field.

Two more home games in September (against Normandy and Berkeley) mean the Cougars will play at home four times in their first five games.

Unfortunately, that also means Affton will be on the road for four of its final five games, including contests at Ladue (Oct. 1), Jennings (Oct. 8), Windsor (Oct. 21), and Festus (Oct. 27). Each of those teams made the playoffs last year.

The Cougars’ lone home game during the second half of the season will be their Senior Night game against Bishop DuBourg on Oct. 14.

Last season, Affton went 4-6 and just missed advancing to the state playoffs. The Cougars were knocked out of contention after their district championship game loss to Festus.
