Flyers Qualify Five Wrestlers to State Competition

Our weekly South County roundup catches up on area sports.

Wrestling

The Seckman wrestling team finished fourth in the state in Class 4 last winter.
The Jaguars look to equal or even better that mark this weekend at the Mizzou Arena. Seckman took a big step toward a high finish as it qualified 10 wrestlers, including five district champions, from the Class 4 District 1 Tournament Saturday at Lindbergh.

Seckman dominated the lower weight classes, winning the first five: Weston Basler (106); Luke Welland (113); Brock Wingbermuehle (120); Danny Farrell (126); and Matt Kraus (132).

Tony Diaz (145), Kaleb Cheek (152), Jacob Lynch (160), Brett Feager (170) and Josh Glore (182) also finished in the top four at districts, which assured a spot in the state meet.

Seckman won the team district title with 209 points. Eureka and Jackson were tied for second with 161 points. Northwest was fourth as a team and the Lions qualified seven wrestlers to the state meet: Christopher Byrd (120); Jackie Tuck (145); Zach King (160); Cameron Noland (170); Kyle Benz (182); Evan Campbell (195); and Devin Cagle (220).

Lindbergh, Fox, Oakville and Mehlville also qualified individuals to state.

The Flyers qualified five including district champion and top ranked Michael Slyman at 160. Other Flyers to qualify were: Andy Dierkes (106); Tom Korenak (126); Sam Stinebrook (138); and Jake Virtue (152).

District champion Dominic Vitale was one of four Fox wrestlers to qualify for state. He will be joined in Columbia by Chandler Sykes (113), Chris Repple (195) and Anthony Williams Reno (220).

Oakville and Mehlville each did well in the heaviest two weight classes. Tyrone Willis (220) and James Broderick (285) were Tiger qualifiers as was Dominic O'Neil (126). Jimmy Sellers (285) was the lone Panther state qualifier.

Kyle McAllister (126) was the lone Affton wrestler to qualify from the Class 2 District 1 Tournament at De Soto.

Hockey

Several area hockey teams are still alive in the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs, including two that faced each other in the second round of the Challenge Cup.

Oakville swept Eureka while Lindbergh needed a shootout win after splitting its two games against Kirkwood in the opening round. Oakville won the first game of the best-of-two series against the Flyers 5-3 Thursday night. The second game on Monday was a tie, giving the series of Oakville.

Rockwood Summit lost in the first round to Marquette. The Falcons forced a mini-game with a 4-1 win in game two of their first round series but then lost to the Mustangs in a shootout.

Zackery Beining had a hat trick to lead Lutheran South to a 7-5 win over Holt in the first game of the second round of the Wickenheiser Cup series. Game two is slated for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Webster.

Seckman and Fort Zumwalt East skated to a 3-3 tie in their first game in the Wickenheiser Cup. The deciding second game will be Monday at 9 p.m. at the .

Mehlville edged John Burroughs 4-3 to win its first round series in the Founders Cup. The Panthers had three first period goals and a pair of short-handed goals. Mehlville will play Ladue in round two. The first game is Monday at 6:30 at Queeny Park with the second game Thursday at 6:30 at Queeny.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Mehlville's Sierra Gray had 29 points in a 68-63 overtime win over Northwest Friday. That was one of the year's most entertaining games. Northwest scored 28 fourth quarter points to force overtime as Brittany Fortner scored 15 points and added 10 assists, eight steals and seven rebounds.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Fox's Tyler Brewer connected on seven of nine 3-pointers and scored 31 points for the Warriors Friday against Festus.
