Lindbergh High Releases 2011 Football Schedule

The Flyers open their season on Friday, Aug. 26 at Oakville, and their home opener is Sept. 2 against Lafayette.

With fall practice beginning Monday, and the first day of school slated for Aug. 15, the Lindbergh High Athletics Department began the official start of its 2011-2012 sporting year by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen football schedules.

The three teams, which will play a combined 38 games in 2011, are all set for their first official training camp workouts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday. The Lindbergh varsity will be the first to take the field in 2011, when the Flyers travel to Oakville on Aug. 26 to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.

In last year’s season opener, Lindbergh played one of its best defensive games of the entire season, holding Oakville to less than 100 yards of total offense while then-junior Flyers QB Peter Simpson ran for a touchdown and threw for another in a 39-7 Lindbergh win.

The Lindbergh JV will also play Oakville in its first game of 2011. That game will be at Lindbergh on Monday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.

The varsity’s home opener will come in Week 2 when Lindbergh will host rival Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

The JV and freshmen teams will also play the Lancers that same week, but both those games will be at Lafayette High in Wildwood. The freshmen will play the Lancers on Thursday, Sept. 1, while the JV will tussle with the Lancers on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Both games are slated for 4:15 p.m. starts.

The marquee matchups for the Lindbergh varsity will come at the end of September when the Flyers will host back-to-back home games against Marquette and Eureka. Those teams tied with Lindbergh for the Suburban West Conference title last year.

All three teams went 7-1 in league play last year, with Lindbergh defeating Eureka while Eureka beat Marquette. Meanwhile, Marquette picked up its biggest win of the entire year, upsetting the Flyers, 35-21, last Sept. 24.

That one loss cost Lindbergh a chance at winning its first outright Suburban West title since its state championship runner-up season in 2002.

Lindbergh will look to get its revenge on Marquette when the teams meet at Lindbergh High on Sept. 23.

The following week, Lindbergh will host its 2011 Homecoming game against Eureka on Sept. 30.

The district playoff opener also figures to be a huge game for the Flyers as they’ll be hosting top-rated receiver Durron Neal (Oklahoma recruit) and De Smet on Oct. 14. That matchup could go a long way in determining which team makes the state tournament this year.

All 10 varsity Flyers football games in 2011 will be played on a Friday night, and each is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
