Lutheran South Volleyball Stays Hot With Straight Set Victory Over John Burroughs

Lancers cruise to 25-14, 25-19 home win over Bombers.

The Lutheran South Lancers girls volleyball team closed out another season of home contests Wednesday and Thursday night, with victories over John Burroughs and Festus High School.

On Wednesday, the Lancers cruised to a straight-set win over Burroughs by scores of 25-14 and 25-19.

Then on Thursday, Lutheran South finished out the regular season with a thrilling come from behind, two sets to one win over Festus, by the score of 24-26, 25-19, 25-14.

Senior hitter Dana Kaempfe was a key figure in both wins for the Lancers, unofficially totaling 22 kills to lead the offense, while senior Lauren Dalton and junior Katie O’Toole combined for nearly 30 digs in the two victories.

The Lancers also got sterling play from setter Kristina Piedimonte, whose passing and defense in particular, kept South from getting swept by Festus.

That night, the visiting Tigers bullied their way to a first-set win and an early second-set lead, behind the stellar net play of senior middle blocker Breanne Borman.

Fortunately though, the Lancers rallied back strong and took control late in the second set, before posting one of their single sets of the whole season, in an 11-point barrage over the Tigers.

The two wins lifted South’s overall record to 20-9-1 this season, extended the Lancers’ current win streak to five games, and gave the program its 13th win in its last 14 games.

And for being on one of the hottest win streaks for any team in the area, South learned this week that it will be the No. 1 seed for the volleyball district playoffs, which begin statewide next week.

The Lancers are in Class 3 District 3, along with Affton, Bayless, Notre Dame, Hancock, and second-seeded tournament host Bishop DuBourg.

The top two seeds get first round byes, so the playoff action will begin for the other four teams on Monday, with Affton taking on Hancock at 5:30 p.m., and Bayless going up against Notre Dame at 7 p.m.

The semifinals pick up on Tuesday, with the Monday night winners taking on Lutheran South and DuBourg at 5:30 p.2m. and 7 p.m., respectively, while the winners from that night, will stay alive for at least one more day and play in the championship game, set for Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
